Man Utd legend Rio Ferdinand reveals he has grown famous cornrows to ‘prove his innocence’ after an 8-month drug test ban.

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Rio Ferdinand admitted he had grown his famous cornrows to prove his innocence after being slapped with a ban for missing a drug test.

It all started in 2003 when Ferdinand left United’s Carrington training ground at lunchtime and accidentally missed a scheduled drug test.

And although the legendary centre-back later took the test and passed, the Football Association’s Disciplinary Board still penalizes him with an eight-month ban and a £50,000 fine.

The Red Devils’ appeal was unsuccessful and the former England international missed the rest of the season, as well as Euro 2004 and the start of the 2004-2005 season.

During his time on the sidelines, the now 43-year-old, who had very short hair at the time, opted for a cornrow hairstyle thinking it would help end his suspension with a hair follicle test.

However, the FA refused to let him take the test and so the ex-Leeds and West Ham star served the entire suspension.

The legendary defender insists he still hasn’t forgiven them for the treatment he’s received.

Ferdinand told YouTube channel Stripped with Specs & Vuj: “The reason I got cornrows was the drug test.

“I was banned for missing drug tests and to prove my innocence of not taking any substance I had to grow my hair to two inches so I could have a hair follicle test a year or two ago at 18 Months.

“A guy comes to the training ground to do the drug test and I forgot he was there and went out to lunch.

“I checked my messages and realized I had missed them. I said I would come back but they had already left and it really took off from there.”

Ferdinand added: “I will never forgive them for the way I was treated. People had it worse and very similar to what I had done and were not treated that way.

“Maybe one day I’ll do an exclusive show about it because I think there’s a lot of football fans out there who think there’s no smoke without fire.”
